The largest temple of Sozopol is the St Georgе Church. It is a fully functional Orthodox parish church located at 36 Apolonia Street in the center of the Old Sozopol. The St Georgе Church is a three-nave pseudo-basilica with one apse built in 1828 on the foundations of an earlier christian basilica with a marble altar. The basilica itself was built right after 330 AD, when Christianity was pronounced as an official religion, and existed till the 15th century. In the St Georgе Church in Sozopol are performed all liturgies from the church calendar. The only exception is during the month of August every year, when the liturgies are performed in the St Assumption of Mary church, including the commemoration of the temple's feast on August 15. It is widely known that Sozopol actually does not have churches from the medieval times. All religious buildings of the town were destroyed during the Ottoman invasion and domination from the 15th century onwards to the 19th century. On the remnants of the old churches the local people built new churches among which are the four most important temples in Sozopol - St George, St Assumption of Mary, St St Cyril and Methodius, St Zosim. Sozopol also has a plethora of small chapels (more than 20), some of which are dedicated to St St Constantine and Helen, St Nedelya, St Nikolay The Miracle Maker, St Paraskeva (Petka), St Athanasius, St Demetrius, St John the Baptist, St Ascension, St Jesus Christ, etc. In the Old Sozopol are located two chapels dedicated to St Marina - the patroness of the town. During restoration works in one of the chapels in 1969 it was discovered that it was built on the remnants of an ancient temple.
